Winlaton, 2nd August 2025 – The 1st Winlaton Scout Group marked a proud moment in its history today as the doors to its newly refurbished headquarters were officially re-opened. The event, held from 10am to 1pm, welcomed dozens of community members, former Scouts, volunteers, and local supporters to celebrate the transformation of the iconic building that has served young people in the area since 1964.

Thanks to significant support from the Youth Investment Fund, the HQ has undergone a major refurbishment to create a modern, accessible, and sustainable space—ensuring it’s fit for future generations of young people discovering adventure and skills for life through Scouting.

Visitors enjoyed coffee, cake, and a rich display of memorabilia charting the Group’s history—from its earliest days to its vision for the years ahead.

The event was also attended by Liz Twist, MP for Blaydon & Consett, along with local councillors Pamela Burns, Maria Hall, and Julie Simpson, who joined the celebration to show their support for the Group and its role in the community.

Chair of 1st Winlaton Scout Group, Susan Eltringham, reflected on the journey:

“It’s been a mammoth task and a real labour of love. There’s been a huge amount of effort from our volunteers, supporters and the wider community—but seeing the building filled with energy and people again made it all worth it. We’re incredibly proud to now have a space ready to support Scouting in Winlaton for decades to come.”

Also attending the event was Colin Hurst, Lead Volunteer for Blaydon & District Scouts, who praised the group’s resilience and dedication:

“The reopening today was a real celebration of community spirit. It’s taken months of hard work and determination, but the result speaks for itself. The new HQ isn’t just a building—it’s a launchpad for the future of Scouting in Winlaton, and we’re excited for what comes next.”

With the grand re-opening behind them, 1st Winlaton Scout Group is now focused on delivering an even wider range of opportunities and experiences for young people across all its sections — Squirrels (ages 4–6), Beavers (6–8), Cubs (8–10½), and Scouts (10½–14). With a revitalised HQ and a passionate team of volunteers, the group is excited to welcome new members and continue making a positive impact in the local community.
