Thunderbird 62 took place on the weekend of 11–12 October 2025, bringing Scouts from across Blaydon & District back to the hills and moorland around Blanchland for our annual two-day incident hike competition.
Patrols navigated through the route, taking part in challenges that tested teamwork, communication, map reading, first aid and practical outdoor skills. As always, the event took place within the continuing theme of the secret state of Drowcab, with scenes and tasks woven into the story throughout the weekend.

A Continuing Tradition
The Thunderbird Competition was first held in 1963, founded by leaders Alan Aydon and David Richardson of 1st Winlaton. Since 1977, the event has been led and developed by Howard Gilfillan, whose support has helped maintain the tradition and character of the competition.
As of 2025, Thunderbird has now reached its 62nd year. Although the route and challenges evolve each year, the heart of the event remains the same: Scouts working as a patrol, looking after one another, learning from the hills, and taking part in a shared adventure that continues to shape memories for years to come.
