Thunderbird

Courage in the Hills since 1963!

The Competition

The Thunderbird Competition is the flagship Scout challenge in Blaydon & District. Taking place over a full weekend, patrols take on a two-day incident hike across the hills and moorland around Blanchland, working together to navigate, problem-solve, and tackle a series of skill-based challenges along the way.

The focus of Thunderbird has always been strong teamwork, encouraging Scouts to lead, support each other, and demonstrate the practical skills they learn throughout the year. First aid, map reading, communication, initiative, camp craft and leadership all play a part — but so does having fun.

Each year, the competition is set within the mysterious world of the secret state of Drowcab, with scenarios, challenges and story elements woven throughout the route to bring the event to life.

Three trophies are awarded each year:

  • Thunderbird – For the winning patrol, based on overall teamwork, leadership, navigation, and task performance.
  • Crazy Bird – For the team or individual who has brought the greatest enjoyment, enthusiasm, or spirit to the event.
  • Joe Stobbart – For the Patrol Leader who has stood out for leadership, calm thinking, and supporting others.

History of Thunderbird

The Thunderbird Competition was founded in 1963 by Alan Aydon and David Richardson, both leaders at 1st Winlaton Scout Group. The aim was to create a challenge that would encourage Scouts to work as a true patrol: independent, resourceful, and resilient in the outdoors.

From its earliest years, Thunderbird was not simply a hike, but a full adventure, combining overnight camping, navigational challenges, and real teamwork under pressure. The event quickly became the peak of Scout competition in Blaydon & District, and remains so today.

In 1977, leadership of the event was taken on by Howard Gilfillan, who has continued to guide and develop Thunderbird across the decades. Thanks to the dedication of leaders, volunteers, and participants over the years, the event has maintained its spirit, identity, and traditions.

As of 2025, Thunderbird celebrates its 62nd year. The event continues to evolve with each new generation, but the core values remain unchanged:

  • Work as a patrol
  • Look after each other
  • Learn from the hills
  • Enjoy the adventure

Thunderbird is not only a competition — it is a tradition. A story passed from one patrol to the next, growing each year, out on the moors of Blanchland and in the secret state of Drowcab.
