The Competition
The Blaydon & District First Aid Competition is held every spring and is designed to help Scouts develop confidence, practical skills, and calm decision-making in real-world situations. The event takes place as a one-day hike in the Blanchland area, where patrols move between a number of incident bases.
At each base, Scouts are presented with a first aid scenario and work together as a patrol to assess, respond, and provide treatment. These incidents range from minor injuries to more serious situations, encouraging young people to think clearly, communicate effectively, and support one another under pressure.
The competition focuses on teamwork just as much as technical skill. Patrols are encouraged to listen to each other, share responsibilities, and demonstrate the care, respect and preparedness central to Scouting.
The event is led and coordinated by Howard Gilfillan, who continues to support and guide the development of Scouting skills across the district.
Competition History
The First Aid Competition has a long history in Blaydon & District. While the earliest written records are incomplete, the D’Eath Cup — the trophy awarded to the winning patrol — was first presented to the district in 1928.
Our archive records show that the competition was running in its modern format by 1975, when 1st Ryton were recorded as winners. Since then, the competition has continued annually, with patrols from across the district taking part each spring.
Despite changes in format and location over the decades, the purpose of the competition has remained the same:
- To help Scouts learn and practise real first aid skills
- To encourage teamwork and calm thinking
- To build confidence through doing, not just knowing
The First Aid Competition reflects a core Scouting principle: we look after each other.
Whether treating a sprain on the hillside, supporting a teammate through a decision, or working together to solve a challenge, the event encourages Scouts to lead with care, respect and practical skill.
