On Saturday 21st February, Blaydon District held a district climbing day at Simonside climbing wall in South Shields. This centre is the same one used for the County climbing competition “Climb When Ready“, but this was just a fun day’s climbing rather than a competition. The atmosphere was very relaxed, with all members and adults free to do as much or as little as they wanted.
Around 50 beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers came along, with rare sightings of a climbing District Commissioner and also our County Commissioner seen heading in a steady upward direction. The emphasis was on giving people an opportunity to try climbing with many having no prior experience. The climbers could choose to go on the harder routes (as in the photo) and there were a good number managing some quite tricky climbs.
Many thanks for all the help from county climbers for belaying throughout the day. Special thanks for all those who really weren’t certain but gave it a go – they demonstrated the true spirit of Scouting.
We’ll try to run another district climbing day later in the year. Watch this space for further info!
