Saturday 7th March was another busy day of climbing for Cubs & Scouts from 1st Chopwell Group and the District’s Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit. Following the District Climbing Day two week’s earlier, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts took part in Durham Scout County’s fantastic “Climb When Ready” climbing event, also held at Simonside Climbing Wall.
It’s a fun competition with everyone taking part in five climbs, with music, videos and live scoring via some high tech’ systems. Both the Scout and Explorer Scout sections resulted in a five and four way tie for first place, with a number of Scouts and Explorer Scouts achieving full marks on the first five routes.
Georgia Brown came joint sixth out of 67 Scouts from across the County and took the District Cub prize whilst Finn Heughan came tenth out of 85 Scouts from across the County and took the District Scout prize. Explorer Scout Jack Harrison, who doesn’t climb regularly, achieved a very creditable fourth place place overall and took the District Explorer Scout prize.
David Stokes, District Explorer Scout Commissioner was belaying at the event all day, with other Leaders from Blaydon District also helping to run the event. David said “It was another great County event and was very much enjoyed by all of our Scouts and Explorer Scouts. Congratulations to Finn and Jack and our thanks go to the County Events Team and once again to Simonside Climbing Wall for providing another day of great activities.”
