After completing all the required stages of the art badge , Chopwell cubs were allowed to go a little abstract. Armed only with paint , paper and a plastic straws , they created masterpieces on the paper … and the table , floor , themselves and any leader that got too close !
It’s that time of year again, Shrove Tuesday. To the majority of us, that’s pancake day and means that a lot of us will be filling our selves up on pancakes & sweet foods. Cooking pancakes is a tradition with all Scout groups, not just Chopwell. This year there was lots of treats on offer, and the Beavers also joined in with the flavour tasting. We even brought back our amazing Chocolate & Marshmallow pancakes as featured in the UK Scouting magazine - this is normally a treat we only have …
On Friday 3rd February, Members of 1st Chopwell Scout Group went for a woodland walk in Chopwell wood. In total their was 6 Scouts, 1 Beaver, 3 leaders and 6 parents who attended the event. The moon looked lovely without any artificial lights, however there was a lot of cloud cover which meant no stargazing - something that many members enjoyed last year. It was a wonderful, but cold evening which was enjoyed by everyone who attended.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Those were the words spoken as members of 1st Chopwell Scout Group gathered around the cenotaph to remember those who fell during the two world wars. As well as the Scouts, the young fire fighters attended, along with Winlaton Guides and also PCSO Nicholas Pilgreen. The weather held off nicely for this years service which was a great relief to many.
On a sunny and warm Sunday morning, Gateshead West fire station opened there doors to the village of Chopwell for an open day. Activities including chip pan fires, RTC, cake sales, tours and a coconut shy which was ran by Chopwell Scouts. The open day was a celebration of the community spirit in Chopwell after the village held a coffee morning for the Station after a break in last may. This year, Scouts from Chopwell held their summer camp at Raven Gill Camp Site which is in the Esk Valley in Yorkshire. The camp had many different elements including traditional Scouting skills, fun activities, and trips to beaches. All 12 young people who attended the camp had a great time away taking part in all the great activities!
On Saturday 30th July, members left Chopwell and headed for the Yorkshire moors for what was to be a great camp! Once arrived we had to pitch all of the tents and unpack …
